When I first read this book, I found some interesting part: this book is about history! I like history, and like to teach history to my son. History is a humanity, it is a fact of human’s thoughts. Learning history means learning human development from time to time.
I teach my son to make connection between those history facts according to the timeline, and all occurrence during the year. When I read 21 Lessons in 20th Century American Music Appreciation, I got idea to connect the history learning with the music trending at the year. Now our history learning becomes richer with music appreciation.
In 21 Lessons in 20th Century American Music Appreciation there are American music composers and singers to be discussed, including:
John Phillip Sousa (1854-1932)
Scott Joplin (1868-1917)
James P. Johnson (1891-1955)
W.C. Handy (1873-1958)
George Gershwin (1898-1937)
Fletcher Henderson (1897-1952)
Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
Elvis Presley (1935-1977)
…. and many more!
Gena write her book in good details about the music and the bibliografi of each musician. This book also contains Youtube link to each masterpiece, so you and your child will learn the history while listening to the music. It is incredibly fun!
This book also contain worksheet that allow your child to practice appreciating music, the composer, and the singer. I must admit that this book make my son learn to listening music very carefully and therefore practice his auditory and musical intelligence.
