Water, straw, plastik bag can be materials at your lab in the house
Not all homeschool family have access to standardized science laboratory. Many of them bought their own laboratory equipment, but there are also families that decide to not doing science experiment that makes them spent a lot of money to buy laboratory equipment. Some frugal family conduct science experiment that doesn’t need expensive tools. The last condition is the best choice for a not so rich homeschooling family.
So, how to manage a lab in the house?
Science experiment sometimes hazardous. It can make explosion, allergy reaction, burn, injury, and other hazard. That’s why it must be conducted carefully. Here are things that you can consider when doing science experiment in the house:
1. Consider the child’s age
Every child need different kind of experiment, and you must consider their ability to understand your directions. Do not conduct hazardous experiment to young children, or it will become disaster!
2. Learn about the experiment carefully, do it with your children
This to make sure you and your children know what is best to your safety and successful experiment.
3. Consider about the experiment’s hazardous possibility
Do you ready to manage your experiment if it turn to hazard? Prepare the medicine and fire extinguisher. If not, it will be better for you to postpone your desire to conduct experiment.
4. Prepare your needs to protect your child
Follow safety standards, use goggles, gloves, mask, or other clothing that match with the experiment safety standards.
5. Tell your children the rule of conducting experiment
If needed you can ask them to sign the science experiment safety standard.
6. Consider your house safety
Conduct your experiment away from things that easily burn, such as gas, or stack of paper. Use stable chair and table, to avoid dangerous fluid spill.
7. Outside are more save than inside
In conduct experiment, I prefer do it outside the house than inside the house. Or, if you need to be inside, choose the room that have window that can be opened wide. So if the experiment produces harmful gases, the gas will be out of the room with ease and no harm.
8. Don’t forget to documenting all the experiment processes
From the planning until the experiment done. This is important, for your child’s learning portfolios and for evaluating your homeschool. If you need a complete science experiment planner, you can download from my TpT Store.
